- As a single man, unless you are a huge sports fan your only real options are to hang out in bars 7 months out of 12 or go online to meet people because the weather here is about as desirable as getting a huge kick in the nads. If you are anything other than a Cleveland fan or Ohio State fan, don't even bother showing your face in any of the locales without preparing for some sort of ignorant, or physical confrontation with some low-life scumbag that forms their whole existence around our sports teams.....Heaven forbid their team loses a game - these guys let it effect their whole day or week to follow.....like the win or loss will pay their mortgage or move them ahead in life in the least.
- As a married man with no kids you have your choice of only a few cultural activities before your only form of recreation is to go to the bar, go to the movies, go out to eat, or sit on your couch and watch television....unless you truly enjoy walking or driving in extreme cold, extreme wind, rain, snow, mud, construction, etc. For maybe 4 to 5 months out of 12 you can visit the Metroparks...doesn’t cost anything and is beautiful in the good months (roughly 1/3 of the year).

- As a re-married man with children, this place sucks just the same. After visiting the few places that do offer culture to a younger generation, your back to spending time in your home in front of the television, or spending money to escape the city (state) to go on vacations to places that offer more cultural places and things than here.
- As a younger person nowhere near retirement, this town is (literally) on of the poorest, rundown cities in the nation.
- We originated and grew as a steel city, an importer, exporter, a manufacturing city, and a city of industry. Now there is hardly anything left of that stuff. But WOW, we have the Rock Hall...such a great "bragging right" that more times than not when they have induction ceremonies, they don't even hold the ceremony here in the city! How pathetic.
Then there's the musical talent that is truly endless here, that leaves town to be noticed somewhere else because no one will ever see or notice anyone in this ghost town.
I know I will be chastised for my comments by others who absolutely love this place, but to each their own. All I can tell you is that if I did not own my own company and have children I do not want to uproot out of their school and surroundings, my wife and I both would be out of here in a flash. I have dedicated money and time purchasing investment properties out of state to have an "insurance policy" for when that time comes I can say goodbye to this place once and for all.
Keep in mind as I type this the temperature is roughly 10 degrees with a wind chill of -15 and snow everywhere. Hmmmm maybe I can go skiing...I think not. Maybe take the bike out for a cruise...not really. So you see, this city is one extreme or another as far as weather. A true outdoors person will agree the winter is stifling cold and the summers are either raining or severely hot.
If I am missing something, let me know. Maybe I need special glasses and the sky is truly not grey and gloomy more than half the year, maybe the trees are actually green most of the year, maybe I am missing the parts of the newspaper that display the economical growth and terrific job market here.

Sweetie trust me I hate it more than you do. I love what you wrote. You made some great points. I have lived in many places but Northeast OH. takes the gag cake! I agree Cleveland has enough to do on a 4 day vacation...maybe.
People here care more about sports than just about anything. I have come to the conclussion that must be all they really have. Yes I as well have a business that caters to the sports industry. Thank Goodness I can at least make money from these Cleveland Fans. I will never understand why they think they are a suburb of Columbus. This hero worship of the Scarlet and Gray is sickening. Maybe it is the lack of sun!

God forbid the Sports bandwagon of Cleveland interferes with your life. They are all over the sports but God help them...When one of the Cleveland teams lose they never mention the loss. They live and die by how the team of the season is doing. Curse or no curse who cares.
Suburbanites will tell you Cleveland Rocks but they refuse to live there. They live in Solon or Westlake but never Cleveland.

It is so sad to see the distruction hey but Ohio State is going to a BSU title game, the Indians are in the Playoffs, the Browns have improved to win more games then the Bengals and well as long as Cleveland has Lebron they will win. The thing about the Rock Hall is that it costs $22 for one person and you can go through it in an hour and a half. The top (exhibit) and bottom floors are the only good spots, the others are just filled magazine covers.

Sounds like a bad case of cabin fever. You mention a lot of really good things in Cleveland. But yeah it can get old after a while. Look on the bright side.
-In a few more weeks we will be done with the worst of the winter, February is always the worst month of the year.
-The art museum is doing a huge expansion, so their will be something new to do really soon.
As far as the economy, well you said you grew up here so you know, it's a rust belt city and it's going to take the administration a lot of time and hard work to pull the city out of it's slump.
If I were you and you can afford it, why don't you take the family on a vacation to somewhere warmer next year. Just getting away for a long weekend in the winter can really help you get through it. Can't do it myself but I wish I could.

You sound depressed. You may have that seasonal depression from not seeing the sun in three months.
I have lived in the Cleveland area for seven years and love it here. That said, I grew up in Toledo and I do NOT want to ever live in Toledo again. I also lived in Michigan for a few years. I'm the kind of person that likes to experience new things so the thought of living one place all my life is not pleasing. I think you have to decide that you're going to be happy despite your circumstances. Happiness is a choice. Do you have any hobbies? You can go around being bitter that you feel you have to stay in a place that you don't like because of your business and uprooting your children or you can look for other people similar to you or if you're not a people person other activities. Do you like photography? Carpentry? Building model airplanes? Fish - try keeping some aquariums? Do you play a musical instrument or want to learn to? Maybe take a class that you've always wanted to? Learn a new language? Study martial arts? Astronomy?
I hope that you are only feeling depressed because of the long winter and will snap out of it soon. I think northeast Ohio is a great place to live. The cost of living is low. The traffic isn't horrible. I would rather put up with the winter weather than hurricanes, earthquakes or live in the tornado belt.

wow...have you ever visited the wonderful things like the Cuyahoga Valley National Park? They don't have a bar there. Ok, the WInking Lizard in Peninsula. And the greatest Metroparks! What about water sports at the lake? The Art Museum, The Natural History Museum, Health Museum??? Have you taken some classes at any of the colleges we have here, or gone antique shopping down Lorain? And how about Cedar Point??!?!

Yep, the schools suck, but as a parent, you're half of their formal education anyway - I've seen stupid kids who have gone to the best schools. My daughter graduated from Rhodes with high honors and 24 college credits before she even graduated HS...it's what you make of it!
One must live in the moment grasshopper. It sounds to me like you have some deep seeded hatred issues. Perhaps you should seek professional help. Maybe you need to sit in front of some fluorescent lights to help diminish your SAD.
One technique you could try is cognitive transference. This is when one imagines they are in another place. You could imagine you where in, lets say..... Savannah Georgia or Dallas Texas(go cowboys), for instance. There are many places you can pretend to be.
What about bringing a bunch of snow into the house and melting it down to make a relaxing bath. You could sit in the tub and relax and dream of Savannah Georgia. Well whatever it is, I'm certain you can find a solution to your hatred issues. Best of luck to you !

No I don't hate cleveland, but I no longer wish to live here. Northeast ohio is fille with poverty and just above poverty.

Dude, we should seriously hang out and commiserate. I just moved here, and as a single girl transplant, it is IMPOSSIBLE to meet people/find things to do. Everyone seems to have made their friends in kindergarten and don't know how to open up their circle and let new people in. And don't even suggest the online dating thing, I've had too many friends tell me horror stories about their experiences with creeps from those forums.
The icing on the cake for me was at a meeting for work last week when we were talking about where we live and would our boss ever want to relocate there. "City 1?" someone asked. "Oh, yeah, I love City 1!" "How about City 2?" asked the next person. "Yes, City 2 is great!" Well, he gets through 8 of our 9 regions before I ask, "What about Cleveland?" He turns to me with a look of utter disgust on his face and says - in all seriousness - "Oh GOD no! I would NEVER move to Cleveland." This from the guy who sold me on how great and awesome and wonderful it is. Classic. Yeah, Cleveland is awesome.

Winters can be dull and depressing, but there are many things to do. Have you toured Stan Hywet in Akron? Be sure to stop by Tangiers while you are in town. Then there is Blossom Music center, very nice in the summer. Cedar Point is one of the best amusement parks in the USA. Have you visited Nelson's Ledges?
It is nice to plan a trip for March somewhere warmer every year. It is something to look forward to, and placate your long wait for more conducive weather that will be coming soon. The USA is filled with wonderful places to see and enjoy. Charlston SC is one of my favorites with it's gardens and plantations in bloom in March. Gatlinburg Tenn is picturesque. Vicksburg Miss is a hidden gem with its civil war history, antebellum B%26amp;Bs, and casino boats on the Mississippi.
I have to add to those going to Cedar Point this summer, to stop at the Homestead Inn, just south of the Cedar Point turnpike exit. It is an old historic strawberry farm turned restaurant. Many neat antiques, and a lovely breakfast-dinner menu. We loved stopping there on the way to Cedar Point. I know you will love it as much as we did.
all in all i like living here. the only thing i hate about northeast ohio is the winter weather... it can be horribly cold outside one day then a few hours later its about 50 degrees and sunny. give it a day then its back to a blizzard. lol

i love northeast ohio! i live in a suburb and it is great! everyone is so kind and helpful! the public highschool has once many awards! cedar point is fantastic! my grandma owns a lake house up there so we go visit and u can see the dragster from the beach! the cleveland metroparks are beautiful and fun if you like to golf! cleveland is great also! there is soooo much to do! and not everyone likes the sports teams where i live! people like the packers and steelers. and they can still can still show their face! its a family friendly part of the u.s. and a lot of people dont see that way!
I've lived in Cleveland for 7 years and love it...but this is coming from someone who grew up in a podunk farming village with a population of about 6,000...and if you were a single gal your only options were to hang out in bars 7 months out of 12 and the other 5 you had the choice to hang out in bars or visit THE COUNTY FAIR to meet guys. Not so cool. The weather sucks everywhere in Ohio, trust me. At least in Cleveland, when bad weather hits, the roads get plowed and salted more than ONCE A WEEK. And if you want to visit cool places (like the Rock Hall, Tower City, Science Center, Metroparks, Botanical Garden, Zoo, Cedar Point, any one of X# of nightclubs in Downtown) with your kids/family/friends you don't have to drive 2-3 hours to get to one. Plus during spring, summer, and fall you're close enough to the lake that you can go boating, kayaking, fishing, swimming (if you dare! :-D ). I think there is plenty of stuff to do around here...I'm never bored. But the winter IS long, and dreary, and gloomy...

Sorry your so bummed but you are right this "city" does suck ive lived here 35 years and truth be told its all pretty much alcoholics and sports bums. Not that theres anything wrong with that ...for them anyway. I desire more out of life, and it certainly isnt in Cleveland. The winters arent so bad if you dont mind being out in the freezing bitter biting cold sure.
The summers are wonderful if you like walking around breathing through a hot wet sponge. Whats not to like? LOL
Take heart my freind you have out of state investments and will be able to escape...keep on planning, and do you have room in your suitcase for me?
