Should skaters be allowed to skate?

Not Just A Hobby, A Lifestyle. Skateboarding is a powerful sport, however it is not a crime. All too often skateboarders are looked at as 'punks' and 'vandals'. Skaters seem to be stereotyped all of the time for no reason. If we truly live in a society where we are free to make our own choices and decisions, and where we are innocent until proven guilty why are we not able to skate freely? Why are we as skaters stereotyped as "trouble kids"? Skaters are told when to, where to, and what to skate on.

Today, skaters around the world are treated with no respect from the public, there are "No Skateboarding" signs everywhere you look. We gave ourselves the reputation we have today. Back when skateboarding was first born, skaters were known as druggies, bums and criminals. Today we are looked at the same way even though we have changed.

Is it illegal to ride a skateboard on a footpath? You know, that little grey area? It is quite clear that a skateboard is a potentially dangerous device. Don't be fooled by the kick turns, flips, rail riding and other flash stunts, actually steering and particularly stopping a skateboard is difficult. Coming to a safe complete stop in a reasonable distance is a trick that many skateboarders never practice or master. A riderless skateboard is quite capable of breaking your ankle (I have plenty of experience in school of the injuries inflicted by the weaponized skateboard) and a board complete with its own rapidly moving "sk8ter d00d" is quite capable of riding over three or four pedestrians in one, leading to broken bones and in extreme cases putting some elderly people off walking for the rest of their life.

Skateboarding to me is just like playing basketball. Work on your jump shot, work on your ollie. There are so many things that relate to each other but are singled out because of their name and there reputation that people give them. The thrill that you get from a sport differs from person to person. Not one single person is the same. The way you think brings you joy, anger, stubbornness, and will to get better. All of those put together makes what you need to good at anything. If you want to restrict a skater, by taking his skate board. well you might as well take a basketball from a Basketball player.

"There are almost 11.08 million skaters in the U.S. More than half of the skating population are younger then 18 years of age. It is a $4.8 billion market. 77 percent of skaters say specialty skate stores are the place to shop. Sales of hard goods and shoes are down but sales of clothing are up." -Shop Eat Surf .

With all the things that I have said, I truly believe that skateboarding is a lot more harmless then law men make it seem. Sure their intentions might be good but, the way things are handled gives them a bad name. There are multiple videos on YouTube, Google, and other websites that show the physical and verbal violence that happens. Skaters have rights just like everyone else, so why discriminate against a person鈥檚 way of life.Should skaters be allowed to skate?

Skateboarding should stay that way, the more commercial it becomes, the less fun it is. Half the appeal of skating is the lack of rules, and some people are out to ruin our fun. Skateboarding is so much more than a sport, don't turn it into a fashion and then call it "a way of life." Thanks for the thumbs down fools.Should skaters be allowed to skate?
